Sustainable Trade: Seizing New Opportunities

…. and finally, following a cancelled 2020, and a virtual 2021, we were back in person for the British Chambers of Commerce - Global Annual Conference 2022!

Sustainable Trade: Seizing New Opportunities

Moderating the afternoon panel session, ChamberCustoms Managing Director, Liam Smyth was joined by panellists:

Elizabeth T Vega OBE, Group CEO, Informed Solutions

Chris Southworth, Secretary General, ICC United Kingdom

Rebecca Warder, Head of Knowledge, Hausfeld & Co LLP

Sam Jones, Head of Climate and Sustainability GB, Coca-Cola Europacific

Sustainability in global trade is being increasingly demanded by consumers and companies, as well as NGOs and governmental organisations, which framed the commitments made at both the Paris and Glasgow COP summits.

Sustainability considerations are also playing an increasingly prominent role in framing trade policy, including tariff treatment of goods and supply chain strategy. Global agreements on green trade have emerged, most prominently Agreements on Climate Change, Trade and Sustainability (ACCTS), but there may be other approaches designed to incentivise exports in green goods and associated services and work towards a clearer definition of these. Alongside these changes, technology, digitalisation and innovation are driving greater efficiencies in customs clearance for goods.

Watch the full video here where you’ll hear the panel discuss:

  • The role the law plays in sustainable trade: barriers to international trade, formal contracts, and the importance of conflict resolution.

  • Digitisation of trade, automations, online tools and the quality of data.

  • What do we mean by sustainability - the single source of truth.

  • A global initiative - adopting the same international standards.
